Java and Bali in 14 days: temples, volcanoes and rice fields

Begin at Borobudur and Prambanan, cross Java to Tumpak Sewu and Bromo, then slow down in Bali: a route keeping our adventures without sacrificing all downtime. This 14-day route is a suggested itinerary drawn from our own, sometimes longer, stays. Transfers are included; international flights are not.

Days 1–3

Yogyakarta

Three days for the city and its two major temples, with tickets and transport arranged ahead.

Day 1 · Malioboro and a first dinner

Settle in Yogyakarta and explore Malioboro without rushing. Prawirotaman is an option for an evening among the cafés and bars we enjoyed.

Yogyakarta

Day 2 · Take time at Borobudur

Book the ticket matching your intended visit, including guided upper-terrace access if wanted. Keep the rest of the day flexible: travel from Yogyakarta takes time too.

Day 3 · Prambanan without rushing

Explore Prambanan and its carvings. We combined the two main temples with a driver; this plan separates them to allow more time at each.

We combined Borobudur and Prambanan with a private driver. Compare that with two separate days according to your energy and available slots. For Borobudur, check exactly what the offered ticket includes: seeing the site and entering the monument may involve different arrangements.

Days 4–8

East Java: Malang, Tumpak Sewu and Bromo

An active stretch, including preparation time before Bromo and a day to reach Bali. Ijen is not part of our visits described here.

Day 4 · A train day to Malang

Take your booked train to Malang. Our story follows this journey across Java; check your service’s station and duration before arranging onward transport.

East Java: Malang, Tumpak Sewu and Bromo

Day 5 · Tumpak Sewu’s amphitheatre

Visit Tumpak Sewu with a driver and local guide. Give the day to the site and your onward accommodation transfer, without adding another major outing.

Day 6 · Get closer to Bromo

Reach accommodation suited to an early Bromo departure and confirm the jeep. Eat early and rest: our outing began in the middle of the night.

Day 7 · Bromo, even under uncertain skies

Leave before dawn for the viewpoint and Sea of Sand, subject to conditions and park access. Our sunrise was cloudy, but the volcanic landscape still impressed us.

Day 8 · Travel from Java to Bali

Reserve this day for reaching Bali, for example via Surabaya airport depending on flights. The road-and-ferry alternative to Ubud is a long journey, not an extra sightseeing stop.

Our local guide made Tumpak Sewu especially engaging, while the driver helped us move between bases without reorganising every transfer. Ask clearly who accompanies the waterfall descent and what is planned after Bromo’s very short night.

Days 9–12

Ubud

Bali is a breathing space after Java: rice fields, temples and quiet time replace predawn starts.

Day 9 · Find a gentler rhythm

After Java’s short nights, enjoy your Ubud hotel. A walk and dinner are enough today; this downtime was part of why we loved Bali.

Ubud

Day 10 · Rice fields and small paths

Choose one rice-field area, such as Tegalalang or Jatiluwih, with a driver if needed. Avoid crossing all of Bali in one day: we appreciated slowing down here.

Day 11 · Temples and Balinese culture

Combine a temple visit and a walk, with Wayang Kulit if a performance is scheduled. Galungan and Kuningan shaped our stay, but their dates cannot be fitted into any visit.

Day 12 · A day to breathe

Enjoy a free Ubud day: pool, massage, coffee or a short walk depending on the weather. Simply arrange tomorrow’s car to Uluwatu.

Keep Ubud as a base for enjoying your accommodation and restaurants too. Our overnight departure towards Lovina was memorable, but that long return journey cannot slip between two visits: it is not included in this already full plan. Add a proper extra day if you want it.

Days 13–14

Uluwatu

A short final stay in southern Bali, with cliffs and coast before heading home.

Day 13 · Head to Uluwatu’s cliffs

Take a booked car to southern Bali. Then choose a beach or Uluwatu temple; for Kecak, check tickets and timing rather than squeezing everything in.

Uluwatu

Day 14 · A final morning in Bali

Stay close to your accommodation before heading to the airport. Southern Bali’s traffic deserves a generous buffer, even for apparently short distances.

Clifftops and the beaches below take different amounts of time: choose a beach highlight rather than descending to every one. For us, Uluwatu was also about its atmosphere and the end of the trip. At the temple, put away small objects the macaques can grab.
