Tumpak Sewu Waterfall
Less open context
A place we recommend in a context where some discretion may feel preferable. This does not mean the venue is discriminatory.
The place in a few words
In East Java, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall forms a vast natural amphitheatre, with dozens of streams plunging down a cliff roughly 120 metres high. You can admire it from the viewpoint above, then descend into the canyon to get closer to the falls and explore the surroundings. On clear days, Mount Semeru rises in the background.
What we loved
This was the very first stop on our private East Java tour, and what a way to start! The waterfall already looked enormous from above, but it was only once we descended into the canyon that we understood its incredible scale. We loved exploring with our 19-year-old local guide, who was funny, enthusiastic and took some amazing photos and videos of us. With Mount Semeru in the background, the setting was unforgettable.
Our tip
Don’t stop at the upper viewpoint! Allow several hours to descend into the canyon and explore the different corners of the site. The trail is steep, wet and sometimes slippery, so wear sturdy shoes. We also recommend leaving Malang early and, if your budget allows, visiting with a local guide. For us, having a guide really enhanced the experience.
