Head to Kuta Lombok, a surfer’s paradise. Ever since we started traveling to Indonesia, we kept hearing his name come up. It's impossible not to want to go and see for ourselves if the reputation was deserved.
During our stay, we had the opportunity to do two surf sessions, both accompanied by local surf instructors. And here, there is no question of putting your towel on the beach before going surfing. Most of the spots around Kuta can be reached by boat. A few minutes of navigation later, we find ourselves in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by dozens of surfers who are patiently waiting for their wave. This arrival alone already sets the mood.
With only two sessions, we are still far from being experts. We spent more time falling off our boards than hitting great waves, but in the end, that's also what we enjoyed. Each wave caught made you want to try another, and each fall ended in laughter.
Apart from surfing, Kuta Lombok remains a rather quiet little town, without a thousand activities to tick off. The atmosphere is pleasant, but most of life revolves around the spots, cafes, restaurants and the few bars that liven up the evenings.
What ultimately marked our stay the most was the reunion. After several weeks of traveling in Indonesia, we found friends in Kuta that we had made earlier on the road, notably in Bukit Lawang, in Sumatra, and even in Bali. We continued to talk with some of them, so we knew we were going to meet again here.
Beyond the pleasure of meeting up, what we loved the most was sharing our respective adventures. In just a few weeks, everyone had accumulated new stories, improbable encounters, struggles, unforgettable moments and advice for the rest of the trip. For hours, we simply exchanged our stories, as if we were resuming a conversation paused a few weeks earlier. This is undoubtedly what made this reunion so precious.
Kuta also has several very nice bars, with live music and a really pleasant atmosphere. We notably spent several evenings at the Stupid Boss Bar. A name that immediately made us smile, for reasons that some may understand. Between a few drinks, live concerts and long discussions with friends found on the road, these evenings are now among our fondest memories of Kuta.
In the end, Kuta Lombok will have taught us one thing: it is not always the destinations that make the most impact, but the people with whom we share them. We came for the waves. Above all, we left with memories of laughter, long discussions and reunions which made this stage even more beautiful.
