The place in a few words

Located on Miniloc Island in Bacuit Bay, El Nido, Big Lagoon is a vast turquoise lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. It's one of Palawan's best-known and most photographed spots, usually visited on island-hopping Tour A. The best way to explore the lagoon is by kayak, paddling between its spectacular rock formations.

What we loved

Big Lagoon is probably one of El Nido's busiest tourist spots. And yet, we felt like we had it all to ourselves! We'd booked a private tour with a very early departure, so we arrived around 7 a.m., before any of the other boats. There was literally nobody there. It was so peaceful that we could hear our own echoes bouncing between the cliffs. A slightly surreal moment, and definitely one of our favourite memories of El Nido!

Our tip

If your budget allows, we'd really recommend booking a private tour with an early departure. It costs more than a standard group excursion, but seeing Big Lagoon without the crowds makes a huge difference. Check that your operator can arrange such an early visit, as access is regulated by time slots. Also ask whether kayak rental and entrance fees are included in the price.
