Northern Vietnam in 14 days: Hanoi, Hà Giang and Sapa
From Hanoi’s cafés to Hà Giang’s passes and Sapa’s rice fields: a mountain-focused route, different from our journey towards Hội An. A four-day loop and dedicated transfer days leave room to enjoy it. This 14-day route is a suggested itinerary drawn from our own, sometimes longer, stays. Transfers are included; international flights are not.

Hanoi
Three days to discover the capital and prepare the next leg without heading straight from the airport into the mountains.
Day 1 · Find Hanoi’s rhythm
Stay near the Old Quarter and walk without trying to see everything. Egg coffee and a first dinner help you find the small moments we loved here.

Day 2 · Monuments, then lanes
Choose two visits among the Temple of Literature, the citadel and mausoleum area, subject to opening times. End in the lanes rather than crossing the city repeatedly.
Day 3 · Cafés, food and preparation
Use the guide’s addresses, such as Tầm Vị with a reservation if needed. Check permitted access for Train Street. Confirm your Hà Giang transfer and loop meeting point.
Try bun cha, banh cuon and egg coffee around the area you are exploring. We also loved small terraces and evenings watching street life. For Train Street, follow permitted access and local instructions instead of building an entire day around one photo.

Hà Giang and the four-day loop
One arrival day followed by four Easy Rider days. Compare what tours actually include before choosing your operator.
Day 4 · A proper transfer day
Take your booked transfer to Hà Giang and sleep there before the loop. Confirm luggage, accommodation and the Easy Rider arrangement; avoid starting exhausted after overnight travel.

Day 5 · The loop, day one
Set off for four days with an experienced driver, as we did. Passes and valleys set the tone; exact stops depend on your operator’s route.
Day 6 · Villages and border mountains
Our route included Lo Lo Chai, Lung Cu and Dong Van. Enjoy breaks with your guides without expecting every operator to follow exactly the same schedule.
Day 7 · Ma Pi Leng’s grand scenery
Leave this day to the mountains and your booked route. Our advertised Ma Pi Leng walk did not happen: confirm included activities rather than relying on brochure wording.
Day 8 · Finish the loop without rushing
The final section returns to Hà Giang after the Du Gia area, depending on the route. Sleep in Hà Giang if possible: tomorrow is reserved for Sapa.
The small group was important to our experience. Our story also describes a change of guide and atmosphere during the loop: ask about the team, accommodation and continuity of guiding, rather than comparing only mileage and tour photos.

Transport · SapaHà Giang–Sapa bus; confirm stops and timing with the operator
Next stop · Sapa
Sapa
The rice fields and mountains deserve some flexibility. We favour a local guide and selected walks over an attraction checklist.
Day 9 · Change valleys towards Sapa
Take a booked bus to Sapa. Our sleeper journey took roughly six hours; check your service and keep the day for travelling and settling in.

Day 10 · Walk through the rice fields
Arrange a walk with a local guide according to the weather. Away from heavily developed attractions, we found the landscapes we really loved around Sapa.
Day 11 · Keep a weather-flexible day
Use this day for another walk or viewpoint if clouds lift. Avoid fixing everything far ahead: our stay taught us to wait for the rice fields to reveal themselves.
Day 12 · Choose rather than tick boxes
Stay in the valley or choose an attraction knowingly. Our story is mixed on Cat Cat and staged settings: they are not essential to enjoying Sapa.
We enjoyed Sapa more when leaving heavily developed attractions for the rice fields. Compare a locally guided walk with a cable-car day according to the weather and your interests. Staying in the valley also creates a different atmosphere from a central Sapa base.

Transport · Back to HanoiBus to Hanoi or transfer to Lao Cai and train
Next stop · Back to Hanoi
Back to Hanoi
These two days include the Sapa return and departure, keeping a final night in Hanoi.
Day 13 · Return to Hanoi before flying
Return to Hanoi by booked bus or by train from Lao Cai, including the station transfer if you choose that option. Spend the final night in the capital.

Day 14 · One last coffee, then departure
Keep only a short walk near your hotel before leaving for Noi Bai. This return buffer avoids making your international flight depend on a bus from Sapa.
Use this last night to simplify departure rather than catch up on every missed sight. A final bun cha, coffee and a walk near your accommodation give the trip a proper ending. Confirm your airport transfer before heading out in the evening.
