Gay Maspalomas: our LGBTQ+ guide

We return to Maspalomas almost every year. Between the beach by Kiosco No. 5, nights at the Yumbo and LGBTQ+ places to stay, we rediscover that feeling of being ourselves.

Playa del Inglés gay district

About this place

Maspalomas is an especially welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travellers, and that atmosphere extends well beyond any one neighbourhood. But the heart of its gay scene is in Playa del Inglés, around the Yumbo Centrum, with its bars, clubs and shows. There are also several gay resorts nearby, while the famous Kiosco Beach No. 5 is the main beach gathering spot.

What we loved

What we love about Maspalomas is the sense of freedom and openness you feel everywhere. Gay couples, families, groups of friends and travellers from all walks of life share the same spaces without anyone batting an eye. That easy mix, rather than an exclusive bubble, is a big part of its appeal for us. And of course, we still love going out at the Yumbo: we've had great nights there on every visit.

Our tip

Don't just focus on the Yumbo's bars and clubs: check the events calendar before your trip. Between Pride celebrations, carnival, themed parties and large concerts, sometimes free, there's often something happening. After several visits, we can say these events are well worth experiencing, even if you're not planning a night out clubbing.

Kiosco Beach N°5

About this place

Located on Maspalomas Beach in Gran Canaria, the area around Kiosco Beach N°5 is the island's most iconic gay beach. Popular mainly with gay visitors, it's also clothing optional, so everyone can choose whether to wear swimwear or go nude. There's a beach bar, toilets, and sun loungers with umbrellas available to rent.

What we loved

We really enjoyed this beach, especially its relaxed atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the sunshine however they like. The kiosk adds a social touch with music, a lively atmosphere, and particularly friendly staff. It's an easy place to spend several hours swimming, sunbathing, and having a drink at the bar. Having toilets right at the kiosk is also really convenient compared with more isolated beaches.

Our tip

There are several nice ways to reach the beach. From Maspalomas Lighthouse, allow around 10 to 15 minutes walking along the shore. You can also start from Playa del Inglés and follow the coastline, or take the paths through the Maspalomas dunes. We recommend choosing different routes there and back: it's a great way to combine a beach day with a scenic walk by the ocean or an exploration of the dunes.

Gay Naked Boat

About this place

The Gay Naked Boat is a men-only gay catamaran excursion off the coast of Gran Canaria. Spend a few hours enjoying the sun, the sea and a relaxed atmosphere. It's clothing optional, so keeping your swimwear on or taking it off is entirely up to you. Different packages are available, including drinks and a light buffet depending on the operator.

What we loved

We honestly had such a laugh! The atmosphere is friendly, free-spirited and pressure-free. What we liked is that everyone can enjoy the experience their own way: just sunbathe on deck or be a little more adventurous. As they say, 'what happens on the boat stays on the boat' 😉. A fun and unusual way to experience another side of Gran Canaria's gay scene.

Our tip

The excursion usually starts with a bus transfer from São Tiago to the harbour. On the bus, you'll receive a wristband indicating whether you're open to more adventurous encounters or would rather just relax. It's a useful way to communicate preferences, although consent always comes first! Several operators offer these trips, often once a week, so check the schedule, packages and meeting point before booking.

Tom's Cruising Bar

About this place

In the heart of the Yumbo shopping centre, Tom's Cruising Bar is a men-only gay bar combining music, a lively atmosphere and a cruising area. The bar also hosts themed nights depending on its schedule, adding some variety to the evening!

What we loved

It's one of our favourite bars at Yumbo! We love its relaxed atmosphere, the music and the quick table service, even when it's busy. We always enjoy coming back, especially for the great people we meet there!

Our tip

You don't need to be into cruising to enjoy the place. Just come for a drink and see where the evening takes you! It's also worth checking the schedule for themed nights.

Yumbo Centre

About this place

During the day, Yumbo Centre is a fairly ordinary open-air shopping centre spread over several floors, with shops, restaurants and terraces. After dark, it becomes a major hub of gay nightlife in Maspalomas. It's not exclusively gay, but many of its bars cater to LGBTQ+ visitors, alongside clubs, drag shows and cruising venues.

What we loved

Let's be honest: Yumbo is a little kitsch, and it's not exactly the prettiest place around. But that's part of its charm! We like wandering around without a plan, getting lost between floors, stumbling upon unexpected bars and exploring the different atmospheres. Whether we're out for a drink, a show or to meet people, we always find somewhere we enjoy.

Our tip

We suggest arriving in the early evening, as the centre starts coming to life, to scout out the bars before the night gets going. Make time for a drag show: it's a great way to enjoy Yumbo's playful atmosphere! Check the events calendar too: during Pride, Halloween and other celebrations, the central square sometimes hosts stages and outdoor performances.

Ricky's Cabaret Bar

About this place

In the heart of Yumbo Centrum, Ricky's Cabaret Bar is a longstanding fixture of Maspalomas' LGBTQ+ nightlife. Drag queens take to the stage for shows mixing music, impersonations, audience interaction and delightfully offbeat British humour. It's a welcoming place to discover drag entertainment over a drink.

What we loved

Whenever we're in Maspalomas, we try to spend at least one evening at Ricky's. We especially enjoy the slightly absurd British humour, the drag queens' quick comebacks and how they involve the audience. It's a great place to have a laugh over a drink before heading to other bars around Yumbo. Even after several visits, we still love coming back!

Our tip

If you've never been to a drag show, Ricky's is an easygoing introduction. Shows generally take place in the evening, so check the current schedule and arrive a little early to get a good seat. Performances are mainly in English, and some of the humour relies on spoken jokes and wordplay.

Rainbow Golf Bungalows, Gay Men-only Resort

About this place

Rainbow Golf is a small men-only gay resort in a quiet part of Maspalomas, Gran Canaria. Its bungalows have terraces and kitchenettes and surround an outdoor pool. The resort is clothing optional, so nudity is welcome but not required. There is also a hot tub, a bar and a paid laundry service. Yumbo Centrum is roughly a 10–15-minute walk away, while Faro 2 is about five minutes away for groceries. Bikes, scooters and cars are options for getting around Maspalomas.

What we loved

We've stayed at Rainbow Golf several times and still love the atmosphere. It's genuinely relaxed, the other guests are friendly and we quickly feel at ease. The staff are lovely too, always smiling and happy to help. The clothing-optional approach adds to that easygoing feeling. The bungalows are simple but reasonably well equipped, including a small kitchen for preparing meals. We also appreciate the peace and quiet while staying fairly close to the livelier side of Maspalomas.

Our tip

We recommend asking for a bungalow on a corner or along the outer edges of the resort. They tend to be more spacious and usually get better natural light. It's a small detail that can make a real difference, especially if you're planning to stay for several days.

AxelBeach Maspalomas

About this place

Located in Playa del Inglés on Gran Canaria, AxelBeach Maspalomas is an adults-only property with balcony apartments, a large outdoor pool, a wellness area and a gym. It belongs to Axel Hotels, a heterofriendly chain that puts the LGBTQ+ community at the heart of its concept. The Yumbo Centrum is just a short walk away.

What we loved

We stayed here once and genuinely felt very comfortable! The rooms were pleasant, with a small balcony, and we especially liked the shared facilities. Between the spacious pool, where it’s easy to spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing, and the well-equipped gym, there’s plenty to enjoy without leaving the hotel. Our only minor downside: the pool wasn’t heated during our stay.

Our tip

If you’re planning to explore Maspalomas’ gay nightlife, the location is hard to beat: Yumbo Centrum is just a two- or three-minute walk away. Beyond the convenience, staying at an Axel also means choosing a brand that celebrates LGBTQ+ visibility, something that matters to us when picking accommodation.

Maspalomas: why do we keep coming back?

“Hey, isn't it Aperol o'clock?” It's around 3 p.m., and Matthieu has just officially called off our alcohol break. One small detail: we're still climbing uphill on the way back from Güigüí Beach in Gran Canaria. We've got another forty minutes of hiking before we reach the car, followed by almost an hour's drive back to Maspalomas. That Aperol Spritz will…
