The place in a few words

In Tainan’s historic center, Shennong Street is a small, iconic street that recalls the city’s trading past. Once part of the bustling Five Channels port district, it retains traditional houses now home to independent shops, artisan workshops, cafés and bars. Its historic façades and colorful lanterns overhead bring together local heritage and contemporary creativity.

What we loved

We loved wandering through the little streets of this neighborhood without looking for anything in particular. Between the small shops, stalls and lively surroundings, something always caught our eye. What we especially enjoyed were the lanterns hanging above the streets, giving the area its distinctive charm. It’s the kind of place where we simply enjoyed strolling, looking around and soaking up Tainan’s atmosphere.

Our tip

We recommend visiting in the late afternoon or early evening, when the lanterns begin to light up. The street is short and Tainan’s historic center is easy to explore on foot, so there’s no need to make a separate trip just for it. Explore the surrounding lanes and perhaps finish your evening at one of the city’s night markets.
