MMCA Seoul – National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The place in a few words
Just steps from Gyeongbokgung Palace, MMCA Seoul is one of South Korea’s leading museums of modern and contemporary art. Opened in 2013, it hosts temporary exhibitions by Korean and international artists, from installations and sculpture to photography and experimental works. Its contemporary buildings and inner courtyards are also worth exploring.
What we loved
We love contemporary art, so this museum was naturally on our Seoul itinerary! During our visit, we saw an exhibition devoted to South Korean artist Do Ho Suh, and it blew us away. From his translucent fabric recreations of living spaces to works made up of countless tiny figures, there was something surprising around every corner. We especially loved how the pieces played with perspective: getting closer revealed details we hadn’t noticed at first.
Our tip
Check the exhibition programme before going: temporary shows change, and the Do Ho Suh exhibition was part of our visit, not necessarily yours. Allow around 90 minutes to two hours to explore at your own pace. It’s easy to combine the museum with Gyeongbokgung Palace and a stroll through Bukchon.
