Maspalomas Dunes
General venue
A recommended place without a particular LGBTQ+ positioning.
The place in a few words
In southern Gran Canaria, the Maspalomas Dunes form a vast landscape of golden sand between the Atlantic Ocean and the seaside resorts. This protected nature reserve can be explored on foot along designated routes, some leading to the beaches. The scenery is particularly beautiful in the late afternoon, when the changing light transforms the dunes.
What we loved
We loved the contrast between the vast stretches of sand and the nearby ocean. Finding an almost desert-like landscape in Gran Canaria is quite surprising! But our favourite moment was watching the sunset from the area near the Riu Palace Maspalomas hotel. The golden light on the dunes, the lengthening shadows and the sun setting towards the Maspalomas lighthouse made it a really special experience.
Our tip
We recommend exploring the dunes at different times and from several viewpoints, as the landscape changes completely depending on the light. It's also worth coming back on different evenings to watch the sunset: weather conditions can vary considerably, offering a different spectacle each time. For daytime walks, bring plenty of water and sun protection. Above all, stay on the designated paths to help protect this fragile environment.
