Lantern boat ride in Hoi An
General venue
A recommended place without a particular LGBTQ+ positioning.
The place in a few words
At nightfall, the Hoài River in the heart of Hoi An fills with small boats decorated with colorful lanterns. For around twenty minutes, you glide among the illuminated boats, with the chance to make a wish and release a small paper lantern onto the water. It's a very touristy activity, but one that really adds to Hoi An's charm.
What we loved
We enjoyed this experience so much that we did it twice during our stay! Not much happens on board, but being surrounded by lanterns, their reflections on the water and the lively riverbanks feels quite magical. Even with all the tourists, we thought the atmosphere was incredible. It's also a lovely opportunity to take a few photos and simply soak up the city's atmosphere.
Our tip
Choose the official boats: tickets are sold at small booths along the riverbanks near An Hội Bridge, where the rides depart. We tried both options at the same price, and the difference was clear: official rides lasted around 20 minutes, while unofficial operators may cut the trip short. We paid 150,000 VND for two people at the time. If possible, visit during the lantern festival on the 14th day of each lunar month, when some electric lights in the old town are switched off. It's even busier, but the atmosphere is special.
