Song Wat: Bangkok’s creative neighbourhood

General venue

A recommended place without a particular LGBTQ+ positioning.

The place in a few words

Just steps from Chinatown, Song Wat is an old trading district in Bangkok finding a new lease of life. Behind historic façades and former warehouses, you'll find trendy cafés, independent shops, art galleries and street art. Its charm lies in the mix of traditional Thai-Chinese businesses and a growing creative scene.

What we loved

We discovered Song Wat on our latest trip to Bangkok and immediately loved its atmosphere. It's the kind of neighbourhood where you arrive with no plan and end up spending hours popping into quirky little shops, stopping for coffee or simply watching everyday life unfold. We loved its slightly trendy feel, unusual spots and the sense that something interesting might be waiting around every corner. Such a lovely surprise!

Our tip

We recommend visiting in the mid-to-late afternoon, while the cafés and shops are still open, then walking over to Chinatown for dinner along lively Yaowarat Road. The two areas are right next to each other, so combining them makes perfect sense. Allow around two hours to explore Song Wat at your own pace.
