The place in a few words

Surrounded by skyscrapers and Bangkok's relentless traffic, Lumpini Park shows a completely different side of the city. Locals come here to run, exercise or simply enjoy a quiet moment by the lake. But what makes this park particularly unusual is its scaly residents: huge water monitor lizards roaming freely, sometimes appearing right beside the paths!

What we loved

Let's be honest: we mainly came here for the monitor lizards! Matthieu loves animals, so there was no way we were leaving Bangkok without trying to spot them. And we weren't disappointed! Watching these enormous creatures move so naturally through a public park, seemingly unbothered by people passing by, was fascinating. We spent quite a while observing them, and that unexpected glimpse of wildlife is what stayed with us most.

Our tip

If you have an hour to spare between sightseeing stops, take a stroll through Lumpini Park. It's free, a lovely place to stretch your legs and a welcome chance to slow down. Runners can make use of the shaded paths too. Go in the morning or late afternoon when the heat is less intense. To spot the monitor lizards, watch the lake's banks and always keep a safe distance!
