The place in a few words
Perched on the hills of Busan, Gamcheon Culture Village is a former working-class neighborhood known for its colorful houses, narrow lanes and street art. Developed to accommodate refugees during the Korean War in the 1950s, it began an artistic transformation in 2009. Today, its winding streets reveal murals, stairways, cafés and sweeping views.
What we loved
What we loved most about Gamcheon was leaving the usual tourist route and getting lost in its little lanes. We spent hours exploring, discovering hidden artworks and finding corners with hardly anyone around. We even chatted with a resident who had decorated the wall of his own house! That spontaneity made the visit special for us: behind the colorful façades and Instagram spots, Gamcheon is still a neighborhood where people live.
Our tip
Set aside at least half a day for Gamcheon. It's quite far from Busan's other neighborhoods, so don't try to squeeze it between several other activities. This is a place worth exploring without constantly checking the time. And take a break at one of the cafés overlooking the colorful houses!
