Dolphin swimming at Lovina Beach
Less open context
A place we recommend in a context where some discretion may feel preferable. This does not mean the venue is discriminatory.
The place in a few words
On Bali’s north coast, Lovina Beach is known for boat trips to see wild dolphins. Tours generally leave very early, around 6 a.m., when the chances of spotting them are particularly good. It’s a rather unusual way to discover these animals in their natural habitat.
What we loved
It was honestly an incredible experience! Wearing a mask, we held onto a trapeze-like frame attached to the side of the slowly moving boat. We could watch dolphins swimming right beside us underwater. Seeing them so close was magical, especially for what we paid. We also loved our guide at Awix Lovina Dolphin Tour. Rather than chasing dolphins like some operators, he took a patient, respectful approach. His philosophy was simple: be patient with the dolphins and they'll reward you. He was really friendly too, and we'd happily recommend him.
Our tip
We were staying in Ubud and rode our scooter before sunrise to arrive by 6 a.m. It made for a very long day! We'd recommend staying near Lovina the night before or arranging a driver instead. Choose your operator carefully: not every tour treats dolphins the same way. Look for a guide who doesn't chase them and respects their natural behaviour. They're wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed.
