Bukit Lawang Jungle Trek
Less open context
A place we recommend in a context where some discretion may feel preferable. This does not mean the venue is discriminatory.
The place in a few words
In northern Sumatra, Bukit Lawang is a gateway to the rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park, home to wild orangutans. Treks range from a few hours to several days, taking you through dense tropical vegetation with chances to spot wildlife. Longer trips include nights at basic jungle camps. It's a physically demanding but memorable way to experience a different side of Indonesia.
What we loved
We went for three days and two nights, and this adventure remains one of our favorite travel memories. Seeing orangutans in the wild, along with gibbons, monkeys and other animals, was incredible. What made it even more special was the atmosphere with our two guides and fellow trekkers: jokes, impromptu magic tricks in the evenings, surprisingly delicious meals and nights filled with jungle sounds. And the return trip floating down the river on inner tubes was brilliant!
Our tip
If you have time, we'd recommend a three-day, two-night trek for a proper jungle immersion. Be prepared for heat, humidity, steep climbs and very basic camps. Bring sturdy shoes, light clothing, rain protection and as little luggage as possible. Choose a responsible local guide who never feeds or touches orangutans. Leaving some comfort behind is part of the adventure!
