Big Buddha – Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen

The place in a few words
Standing 69 metres tall, the Big Buddha at Wat Paknam Phasi Charoen is impossible to miss! Located in Bangkok's Thonburi district, this enormous golden statue depicts the Buddha meditating above the surrounding rooftops. Completed in 2021, it's impressive both for its scale and its shine. Entry to the temple is free.
What we loved
Even though we'd seen photos beforehand, we weren't expecting anything quite this huge! It's only when you stand at the foot of the statue that you really grasp its extraordinary size. And with that golden surface shining in the sun, you certainly can't miss it! We also loved the contrast between the giant Buddha and the small neighbourhood houses. For us, it's absolutely worth visiting.
Our tip
After seeing the Big Buddha up close, head to Hidden Bangkok Bistro across the canal. We stopped there for a coffee with an incredible view of the statue. Drinks cost a little more than elsewhere, but the setting is worth it! Boat trips along the nearby canals are another option. We haven't tried them ourselves, but they offer a different perspective on the area.
