Balos Beach

Balos Beach

General venue

A recommended place without a particular LGBTQ+ positioning.

The place in a few words

Located in northwestern Crete, Balos Beach is a spectacular lagoon with white sand, shallow turquoise water and wild scenery. You can reach it via a dirt track followed by a short hike, or by boat from Kissamos. There are some sun loungers, seasonal snack stands and even goats roaming freely!

What we loved

For us, this was simply the most beautiful beach we discovered in Crete! The view over the lagoon as you approach from above is incredible, and the scenery is just as impressive once you reach the beach. We loved its wild, picturesque feel, with goats wandering around everywhere, even on the sand.

Our tip

We really recommend driving rather than taking a boat, so you aren't tied to an organized excursion's schedule. The final 8–10 km follow a rocky dirt track, so choose a car with decent ground clearance, drive slowly and check your rental agreement. From the car park, allow about 20–30 minutes to walk down and longer to climb back. Bring sturdy shoes, water and sun protection, and arrive early before the tour boats.
