From Interlaken to the funicular
We started our hike in Interlaken, a place that feels both deeply Swiss and buzzing with tourists. After parking in the city center, we took the funicular up to Harderkulm. In just a few minutes, we were high above the valley, ready to tackle the ridge.
Forest beginnings and drifting clouds
The trail began under the trees, with clouds wrapping the peaks in mystery. We moved forward quietly, excited by the thought of what was waiting for us higher up.

The panorama unfolds
Soon the mist cleared and the view opened wide. Two turquoise lakes appeared, Brienz on one side and Thun on the other, shining like jewels. We found a grassy spot for a picnic. Having lunch with that view was unforgettable.

Along the ridge, vertigo and wonder
The path became narrower and more aerial. Walking along it felt like floating between sky and wind. At every step, the view changed and called for yet another photo. We simply couldn’t resist.
The ibex, majestic and many
Around a bend, an ibex stood still, watching us. Then another, and another. Soon we saw several of them grazing peacefully. Their presence made the hike even more special.

Clouds threatening, but sparing us
For a moment, we thought a storm would catch us. The sky darkened, the light shifted, the air grew heavy. In the end, the rain passed just beside us, leaving us dry and grateful. We carried on, relieved and happy.

Arriving in Habkern and the ghost bus
After about five hours of hiking, we reached Habkern, tired but glowing. We stopped at a small café for a coffee and a well-deserved beer. That’s when we learned the bus back to Interlaken only ran with reservations. Of course, we hadn’t booked anything. So we waited about forty-five minutes until an Uber finally came to pick us up. A funny ending to a day full of beauty.

Conclusion: an unforgettable hike
The Hardergrat is now one of our favorite hikes. The slender ridge, the surreal lakes, the ibex encounters, the ever-changing sky. Demanding, yes, but pure magic from start to finish.
